I am able to provide addictions counselling for those struggling with the misuse of substances such as alcohol, cannabis, tobacco, cocaine, opiates and other addictive substances. I am also able to provide counselling for those seeking ‘aftercare services’ after completing a residential addictions program. My core approach is based on a cognitive-behavioural approach to addiction treatment. I do use a range of clinical strategies in response to what appears to be most empowering in helping those I work with to better manage their addictive behaviours – and to potentially even increase their self-understanding.
In addition to my Masters’-level psychotherapy training, I have an additional year of specialized training in addiction treatment. I also worked as an addictions counsellor for more than 5 years at the Centre for Addiction and Mental Health in Toronto and have continued to provide addictions counselling as part of my private practice for the past 5 years. I currently serve as a professor and as the program coordinator for the Addictions and Mental Health Graduate Certificate program at Durham College.
