How long do people attend counselling/psychotherapy?

The length of time you spend in counselling/psychotherapy is determined by a large number of factors, including the severity of your symptoms and how effective you are finding the sessions.  If you are benefiting from our sessions together, I would recommend attending a minimum of 6 to 8 sessions in order to increase the likelihood of positive outcomes.  It is important to note that it is possible to benefit from less than 6 sessions and more than 8 sessions and it is even possible to find even a single session worthwhile.  While I welcome the opportunity to work with you for a longer period of time, my goal is for our sessions together to provide you with a new level of knowledge and empowerment that results in a decreased need for my services over time.

What are your professional qualifications?

I am a Registered Psychotherapist and a Certified Canadian Counsellor.  If you have benefits through your employer, you might want to double-check to ensure that psychotherapy and/or counselling is covered as part of your benefits package.

Note that I am not a medical doctor, a psychiatrist or a clinical psychologist.

How often should I plan on coming to counselling/psychotherapy?

The frequency of your counselling/psychotherapy sessions is determined by a large number of factors, including the severity of your symptoms and how effective you are finding the sessions.  I will advise you after our first meeting the frequency that I feel would be most ideal for you.  I will typically suggest more frequent sessions – preferably weekly – for the first 3 to 4 meetings – followed by less frequent sessions if we are noticing positive changes.  While I welcome the opportunity to meet with you often, my goal is for our sessions together to provide you with a new level of knowledge and empowerment that results in a decreased need for my services over time.
